MARRIAGE · IN HER OWN WORDS
My husband started taking a "volume" supplement without telling me. Here's what happened.
I thought it was me. It wasn't.
So this one's a little more personal than usual.
For those of you who've been reading along for a while, you know I don't hold much back here. But I almost didn't write this one. Then I told two friends over wine, and both of them went quiet and said some version of "wait… that's us."
So here it is.
My husband ordered a supplement. For his — well — his finish. Without telling me.
I should back up, because this didn't start with a bottle. It started about two years ago, and if I'm honest, it started with me quietly deciding something was wrong with me.
Nothing dramatic happened. That was the hard part. It just… faded.
And there were smaller things I noticed and never said out loud. Less of… everything, at the end. He'd started "saving it up" — skipping days, like he was rationing. Once he even apologized afterward, which he had never done in almost twenty years, and then wouldn't talk about why.
I did what I think a lot of us do. I made it about me. Was it my body? Was it because we'd gotten comfortable? Was he just… done with that part of us?
I never asked him. He never brought it up. And that silence was honestly worse than any conversation could have been.
Fast-forward to this spring. I'm grabbing his gym bag for the wash and there's a little white bottle in the side pocket. Plain. Black logo. It said VOLUME on the front.
I laughed out loud. I genuinely thought it was a joke — because he is not a supplement guy.
So that night I held it up and said, "…Is this about me?"
And he went red. Like, bright red. And then he told me the thing he'd been sitting on for two years: it had been happening for a while, it bothered him way more than he'd let on, and he was embarrassed. He thought it meant he was getting old. He thought I'd noticed and was too polite to say anything.
(I had. I was.)
It wasn't me. It was never me.
He just didn't know how to say it.
Honestly, the biggest reason I was tempted to roll my eyes is that I'd already seen this movie with my own experiments. Half-used magnesium jars, sleep gummies that did nothing. All just black holes where money goes to die.
But he'd done his homework, which is very him. He's the guy who reads the back of the box at the grocery store. He showed me why he picked this one:
Three ingredients. Not fifteen. Not twenty. Three — with the full dose of each printed right on the label.
Two softgels a day. Everything else he'd looked at was four big capsules with tiny amounts of fifteen-plus things.
His explanation, which I've now heard approximately 400 times: "Most guys our age aren't broken. We're just running low on the raw stuff our bodies use to make it. You put it back, it comes back."
He also told me, very seriously, that it would do nothing for the first few weeks. "It's not a stimulant. It's a refill. Refills take time."
So I wrote off the money and figured he'd take it for a month, notice nothing, and it would join my magnesium in the cabinet.
Boy, was I wrong.
…and in more ways than one.
It wasn't watery anymore.
He was right about the first couple of weeks. Nothing. I'd honestly forgotten about it.
Then around week three, I'll keep this PG — things were just… fuller. Thicker. It had body to it again, instead of that thin, watery thing it had turned into.
And there was more of the before part, too. (If you know, you know.) That hadn't happened in years.
I asked him about it. Turns out one of the three ingredients is something called pygeum — he says it's the one guys mention most for exactly that. I told him. He looked smug. Reasonable response.
It looked healthy again.
This one I noticed before anything else, which surprised me.
You know that thin, clear, slightly yellowish look that seems to creep in for a lot of our partners somewhere after 40?
Gone.
What was there now was white. Consistent. And — I cannot believe I'm saying this — just healthy and clean-looking. Like the difference between full-fat milk and watered-down skim.
I know that sounds like a weird thing to care about. But it changed how it felt to me. It looked like him again — the him from fifteen years ago.
(He says that one's the zinc. There's 50mg of it. I did not ask follow-up questions.)
The one I thought I'd hate.
Ok. The volume.
I'm a clean freak. So going in, I would have told you this was at the bottom of my list. I want less mess, not more. I was wrong.
Well, not about the mess. But about how I feel about it.
There's something about it that feels — and I'm going to do my best to put a word to this — primal. It makes me feel wanted. Like I did that. Like he's that into me, and his body is just saying it out loud.
I hadn't realised how much of my own enjoyment was tied to that until it came back.
And then there was The Night.
The first time it really, really happened, I said "holy cow" out loud.
Without missing a beat, he said:
"Holy Grail, actually."
I've never laughed so hard in bed in my life. He has never, ever let me live it down.
(That's the name, by the way. The Holy Grail of Volume. He thinks he's hilarious.)
The part that actually matters
Here's what I didn't expect, and the real reason I'm writing this.
The volume was never really the point. It was him.
He reaches for me again. He's funny again, after. He stopped apologizing. He stopped "saving it up." He walks around the house like a guy who got something back that he thought was gone for good.
One of the reviews he showed me put it better than I can: it's about "giving men back what life has taken."
And me? I spent two years quietly believing it was my fault. It wasn't. It was something his body had been running low on, and nobody — not his doctor, not either of us — had ever said that out loud.
If you're lying there wondering if it's you… it probably isn't.
I'm not the only one
After all this, I went down a rabbit hole reading reviews (as one does at 1am). Turns out a lot of us have been through the exact same thing:
"There were never any complaints from me prior to HG, HOWEVER…boy was I missing out! … I never want him to run out of Holy Grail!"
"Bought this for my boyfriend I can definitely see a difference."
"We were a little skeptical at first…"
"I was blowing dust clouds… Within a couple of weeks, she was back to saying 'holy cow…'"
"Well was dry now I have a leak"
He also pointed out that over 100,000 men have used it, and in their customer survey 94% said they noticed a difference.* I'm a numbers person, so that helped.
So — what now?
Well, my newfound appreciation has led to us stocking up BIG time (lol). He switched to the 90-day plan — with the 33% off that's running on it right now — as a little gift "for us."
He says that's the one to get anyway, because the full change takes about three months, and the 90-day plan is the one with the 90-day money-back guarantee. If nothing changes, he gets his money back. (Something did. A lot of something.)
And we're not going off it!
So yeah, that's the story of how I stopped blaming myself, and got my husband back.
For him: if this sounds like you, I promise she's noticed. And I promise she'd rather you fix it than keep quiet about it.
For her: he won't look this up himself. Mine sat on it for two years. Sometimes love looks like leaving a link in his texts without saying a word.
I've linked the one he uses below. He's a big researcher, and he reckons this one is the best out there for your buck.
