Pygeum: Benefits, Side Effects, and What the Evidence Actually Shows
Pygeum is one of the best-studied herbal extracts for prostate health. Here’s what the research found, what it didn’t, and how to use it sensibly.
Key Takeaways
- Pygeum is an extract from the bark of the African cherry tree, used in Europe for prostate symptoms since 1969.
- A Cochrane review of 18 trials and 1,562 men found it moderately improved urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate.
- Side effects were mild and comparable to placebo.
- Trials averaged about two months, and the reviewers stressed standardized extracts.
- There’s no trial on pygeum and semen thickness or pre-volume. That benefit rests on what men report.
On this page
Pygeum is one of the most studied herbal extracts for prostate health, and one of the ingredients men mention most when they talk about semen thickness. Those are two very different levels of evidence. This guide separates them.
What pygeum is
Pygeum is an extract from the bark of the African cherry tree, Prunus africana (formerly Pygeum africanum). It has been used in Europe since 1969 to treat mild to moderate symptoms of an enlarged prostate, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH.[1]
What the research shows
The most rigorous summary is a Cochrane systematic review that pooled 18 randomized controlled trials involving 1,562 men with BPH.[1] Compared with placebo, men taking pygeum:
| Outcome | Result vs. placebo |
|---|---|
| Overall symptoms | More than twice as likely to report improvement |
| Waking at night to urinate | Reduced by 19% |
| Urine left in the bladder | Reduced by 24% |
| Peak urine flow | Increased by 23% |
The reviewers were also clear about the limits. The trials were small and short, used varied doses and preparations, and rarely used standardized symptom scales. They called for larger, longer studies.[1]
Side effects and safety
In the Cochrane review, side effects from pygeum were mild and comparable to placebo. Dropout rates were similar too: 13% on pygeum and 11% on placebo.[1]
A few sensible precautions:
- If you have urinary symptoms, get them evaluated by a doctor before you self-treat. Symptoms of an enlarged prostate overlap with other conditions that need ruling out.
- If you take prescription medication for your prostate, talk to your doctor before adding pygeum.
- No trial compared pygeum head-to-head with standard prostate medications,[1] so it isn’t a substitute for them.
Why standardization matters
The Cochrane reviewers’ conclusion specifically refers to a standardized preparation of pygeum.[1] Bark extracts vary, and an extract standardized to a defined content is the only way to know you’re getting a consistent amount from batch to batch. If a label doesn’t say the extract is standardized, you can’t tell.
How long pygeum takes
The trials in the Cochrane review lasted an average of 64 days, ranging from 30 to 122.[1] Pygeum isn’t something to judge after a week. Give any routine that includes it at least two to three months.
Pygeum, thickness and pre-volume
This is where we want to be precise. Pygeum is the ingredient men mention most for thicker semen and more pre-volume. Most of semen’s fluid comes from the seminal vesicles and the prostate,[2] so a prostate-focused ingredient is a reasonable candidate. But there is no controlled trial on pygeum and semen thickness or pre-volume.
So we describe that benefit as what men report, not as a proven effect. If someone tells you pygeum is clinically proven to make semen thicker, ask to see the study.
Why we don’t sell pygeum alone
Pygeum supports the prostate side of the system. Volume and quality depend on other inputs too. In a survey of 312 customers taking all three inputs together, 94% reported noticeable results in 3–6 weeks.[3]
Where Holy Grail fits
Fixing one input alone rarely moves much, because the other two become your new ceiling. Volume, thickness and quality rise together. That’s why The Holy Grail of Volume covers all three inputs, each at a full dose, in two softgels a day: sunflower lecithin 1,200 mg, standardized pygeum extract 200 mg and zinc 50 mg.
No proprietary blend and nothing hidden. Every amount is printed on the label. More than 100,000 men have used it.
The Holy Grail of Volume
Three outcomes. Three inputs. Two softgels a day.
- Volume — Sunflower Lecithin 1,200 mg
- Thickness — Pygeum 200 mg
- Quality & color — Zinc 50 mg
